Cricket's Three Formats and Betting

The first step to understanding cricket betting is knowing the formats. Each format has a different style of play and pace of results — so odds on the same market can vary quite differently.

T20 — Fast and Intense

Each team plays just 20 overs. Results change quickly, so odds move with every ball. Franchise tournaments like BPL and IPL are played in this format. The T20 World Cup is the biggest international stage for this format.

BPL IPL T20 World Cup

ODI — Fifty-Over Strategy

In this 50-over format, teams balance their batting and bowling throughout. The ICC Cricket World Cup and major bilateral series are played as ODIs. For the Tigers, this is the format that carries a special place in the hearts of Bangladeshi supporters.

ICC World Cup Bilateral Series

Test — A Test of Patience

In this five-day format, a draw is a valid result, so betting markets are set around three possible outcomes. A single wicket or one session's performance can shift the entire flow of the match — this makes betting more dependent on analysis.

gold's Edge in BPL and IPL Betting

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is one of the most popular tournaments among cricket fans in Bangladesh. At gold, BPL match markets open before the game starts and in-play betting continues through every over.

During IPL, the range of markets expands further — top scorer, series winner and player performance markets all run at the same time. For international matches, separate markets are also set up for Bangladesh Tigers games.

Betting is not just about predicting outcomes — choosing the right market, understanding odds and enjoying the game within your budget is what matters most. Betting is for entertainment, not as a source of income.

Introduction to Popular Betting Markets

Multiple markets are available for cricket betting at gold. Each market has a different focus and works differently. The most commonly used markets are briefly explained below.

Match Winner

The simplest market — which team will win? Team A or Team B? In T20 there is no draw, so there are only two options. In Test matches, a draw is also available as a separate option.

All Formats

Toss Betting

Which team will win the toss — this is a separate market from the match result. Since the toss outcome is completely random, the odds for both teams in this market are generally almost equal.

T20 · ODI

Top Batsman

Which player will score the most runs in a specific innings or across the full match? This market has multiple options, and odds on lesser-known players are generally higher.

ODI · Test

Total Runs (Over / Under)

Whether a team or the full match will exceed a set number of runs — in this market you choose "over" or "under". Example: total runs over/under 315.5.

ODI · T20

Multi Bet (Multiple Selections)

Multiple matches or markets can be combined in a single bet. You only receive the full return if all selections are correct; one wrong selection loses the entire bet. The odds of each selection are multiplied to get the total odds.

All Markets

Handicap Betting

To reduce the gap between two unevenly matched sides, the bookmaker gives one team a virtual advantage. After applying the handicap, the team with the higher adjusted score wins the bet.

How to Read Odds

Three odds formats are used in cricket betting — decimal, fractional and American. All three express the same probability, just written differently. See the examples below.

Example 1 (Team A to win, stake ৳200):
Decimal 2.50 = Fractional 3/2 = American +150. If the bet wins, the return is ৳500 (৳300 profit + original ৳200); if the bet loses, ৳200 is gone.

Example 2 (Team B to win, stake ৳200):
Decimal 1.80 = Fractional 4/5 = American −125. American minus odds show how much you need to stake to make a ৳100 profit. On a ৳200 stake, the return is ৳360 (৳160 profit).

Decimal format is the default at gold, but you can change it to your preference. After gold Login, select the format from settings.

Format Team A (slight favourite) Team B (favourite) What a winning bet means
Decimal 2.50 1.80 Odds × stake = total return
Fractional 3/2 4/5 Numerator / denominator = profit per ৳1 staked
American +150 −125 + means profit on 100; − means stake needed for 100 profit
Example return (৳200 stake) ৳500 ৳360 A losing bet costs ৳200 in both cases

The figures above are for illustration only — actual odds change by match and timing. Betting is a form of entertainment; do not bet with the aim of making a financial return.

Live In-Play

How Odds Change When a Wicket Falls

In live or in-play betting, odds update after every ball during the match. When a wicket falls, the batting team's odds generally increase (meaning their chances of winning drop) and the bowling team's odds shorten. The reverse can also happen — a fast-scoring powerplay means the batting team's chances of winning go up.

In a T20, one big over in the final 5 overs can shift the entire match. That is why in live betting, decisions are made in the moment — it is a completely different experience from pre-match betting. At gold, the live scorecard and markets appear on the same screen.

Keep in mind: in live betting, decision time is very short. Set a budget and try not to enter too many markets at once on impulse. Read gold's guidelines on responsible betting.

Wicket = Odds Rise

When the batting team loses a wicket, their odds of winning increase and the bowling team's odds shorten.

Powerplay Moment

A big score in the first 6 overs can quickly shorten the batting team's odds.

Duckworth-Lewis Situation

If play is halted by rain, the target is revised using the DLS method — odds are adjusted accordingly.

Cash Out Feature

Close out a bet before the match ends to secure a partial profit or reduce a loss.

Football and Other Sports Betting

Alongside cricket, gold also offers football betting. Football markets include match winner, goals over/under, half-time result and corner count. In-play odds run here too — but in football, odds shift even faster after each goal.

The key difference between cricket and football is the pace of scoring. In football, only 1–2 goals may come in 90 minutes, so plenty of time remains even after a 1–0 goal. In cricket, the score and situation change with every over, making in-play markets move more rapidly.

A Few Practical Points Before You Start Betting

01

Set Your Budget First

Decide on a fixed amount for each session and try not to go beyond it. This helps keep betting a form of entertainment.

02

Avoid Multiple Markets in One Match

Placing a bet after properly understanding one market is more effective than placing small bets across many markets.

03

Be Careful with Multi Bets

Multi bets carry higher odds, but one wrong selection loses everything. Start by practising with a two-selection multi bet.

04

Know the Format, Then Bet

The same market behaves differently in T20 and Test matches. Betting on a format you know makes it easier to read the situation.

05

No Big Bets After a Loss

Placing a large bet to recover a lost stake usually leads to even bigger losses. Take a break.

Cricket Betting Common Questions

In T20, results come quickly over 20 overs and odds shift with every ball. In ODI, with 50 overs in play, a single wicket or a big partnership does not move the odds as much — the overall flow of the innings matters more. T20 markets are more fast-moving, while ODI gives more room for analysis.

In a multi bet, the decimal odds of each selection are multiplied together. For example: if three selections have odds of 1.50, 1.60 and 1.70, the combined odds are 1.50 × 1.60 × 1.70 = 4.08 (approximately). On a ৳100 bet, if all selections are correct the return is ৳408. If even one is wrong, the entire ৳100 is lost.

BPL matches typically offer markets for match winner, toss, time of first wicket, total runs in the powerplay, total runs over/under, and top batsman. In live betting, separate run markets for each over may also be available. Market availability varies by match and time.

If a match is cancelled or abandoned due to rain, bets are generally voided and the stake is returned. If a match is shortened and decided by the DLS method, bets are settled based on the DLS result. For specific rules, see gold's Terms and Conditions.

Handicap betting is common in cricket, especially in ODI and Test matches. A market is set up by giving one team a virtual head start or deficit in runs or wickets. For example: a −30 run handicap on Team A means 30 runs are deducted from their final score to determine the result. This helps create competitive odds between two teams.
